Point of sale (POS)

The point of sale (POS) is the place where a retail transaction is completed. It is the point at which a customer makes a payment to the merchant in exchange for goods or services.

The POS in various environments can be customised and tailored to particular requirements for the retailer or a specific product.

The point of sale is often referred to as the point of service because it is not just a point of sale, but also a point of return or customer order.

Similar to point of sale, a point of purchase (POP) is a reference point for the counter where customers pay.
